What is Kolache?
"kuh-la-chee"
The Kolache, a popular Czech pastry, is made of a soft yeast dough enveloping a sweet or savory filling. The dough is a bit more dense and sweet than you will find with most filled pastries, making it a delicious treat to enjoy any time of day!
In 1953, Wendel Montgomery, founder of the famous Village Bakery in West, TX, developed a unique version of this baked good filled with sausage and referred to it as Klobasnek. As a Czech-Texan, Wendel noticed the craze that Texans had for the traditional hot dog and saw an opportunity to create something even better - a hot dog enclosed in sweet kolache dough.
